Following on today’s unveiling of Xbox 360 live TV, Microsoft has teased Windows Phone 7 based smartphone owners that they will soon be able to control their Xbox 360s through their phones. The Xbox Companion App will enable a user to search for content and then control its playback on a TV. Using a Windows phone, a customer can search through the Xbox Live Marketplace catalog of games, movies, music, and TV shows.
The phone can then be used to find out more details about the selected media including the plot, its stars, other roles the actors have played, and other related informational content. When user then hits play, the phone switches into a “controller mode” and becomes a virtual TV remote to control all aspects of the playback.
The company has not revealed when it will be available. When the Xbox Companion App does become available, it will be a free download.
